Albufeira was initially occupied by Romans and its original name was Baltum. The Romans were very famous for the administrative skills, intense agriculture and commercial activities. The roads and bridges build by them can be seen in the Albufeira.
In the middle of the 19th century, the fishing industry did much for the economy of Albufeira. Exporting the dried food and seafood was the primary income source. In 1960’s tourism started in Albufeira and in 1986 Albufeira became “city”. The evolution is continuing since then. Algarve is blessed with the extraordinary climate with more than three thousand hours of sunshine per year. Considerable percentage of 5 million tourists who visit Algarve, come to the Albufeira every year. More and more people are choosing Albufeira because of the beautiful beaches, lovely social nightlife, golf courses, glorious countryside and the local cuisine. |
